Embalming has the function of preserving bodies for wakes, air transport and even special cases of politicians and celebrities. Despite being something so common and old, not everyone knows how this process works and the contributions it has already brought to modern medicine.
Embalming is a process carried out on a corpse to preserve it for a long period of time. It is a process so that the body is in condition to be transported and also to be displayed during the wake, before family and friends.
One of the procedures consists of replacing the blood by a solution of water and formaldehyde. Besides helping in the conservation of the body, this practice leaves the body more similar to the person when he/she was alive. This process also helps to avoid bad smells and eliminate existing microorganisms.
There are 6 steps to embalming a corpse
1. Washing of the body;
2. Drainage of the blood;
3. Injection of chemical solution;
4. Suture;
5. Massage the body;
6. Dressing and Necromaquilla.
1 - Washing the body
The first stage consists of the hygienization and cleaning of the corpse. Clothes are removed from it, and then the internal and external washing is done. For this procedure, specific chemical products are used, such as germicides. Pródaver's bactericide, fungicide and virucide disinfectant is an excellent example of a product used for sanitising, as it is colourless and odourless. The aim is to eliminate bacteria that may cause the body's decomposition to accelerate.
2 - Drainage of the blood
Drainage of the blood is very important to avoid hematomas and blood clots in the body of the corpse. Therefore, an incision is made in the area between the shoulder and the neck and a tube is inserted into that area for drainage.
3 - Injection of chemical solution
A chemical solution composed of water and formaldehyde is injected. These two components are very important for the conservation of a corpse.
4 - Suture
This is when, after all the previous stages have been duly completed, the suture of this cut is made.
5 - Body massage
The goal of massage is to release muscular tension in the body. Consequently, it gives a natural and realistic image to the deceased.
6 - Dressing and necromaquillage
The last stage is the preparation of the body for the wake. In this stage, the corpse is dressed in clothes chosen by the family or by the deceased while still alive. There is also the necromake-up process, which helps the deceased to have a natural appearance, hiding stains and tonal differences. After this final stage, the body is ready to be presented to family and friends.
